Did I run into a glut of excellent auds of bad performances?!?
I most certainly prefer auds and this is one of the greatest auds I've ever heard. Though I must say, a little too excellent. Sounds like somebody had some real good access for this one. ;)
However, I'm not sure who stood in for Bill and Mickey. And it sounds like Bobby should've left the Esau alone from the night before.
Dammit this blows. I really wanted to dl this one. :(
So 5 star taping, 2 star performance= 3 stars rating.

I think it sounds great for an aud. Phil and drums come through nicely. My only criticism is that Bobby could be turned up a little.
Its not a mind blowing show, but they were on. Well worth the listen/download.

So there we were my intrepid friends for ever and a day. We drove or should I say we headed out of Oakland the night before. Curly and I flew from Buffalo and gathered in Jokeland with our solid friend and the "West Coasters" Wait, Am I imaging or is everything moving here much too slow? Anyway, we drove all night and I had the opportunity to see a brilliant sunrise in the valley upon entering Las Vegas or some where thereabouts? Only time seeing Vegas, but glad I made it! It is now a family place?
Loved the split Other one!!! Funky stairs!! Lotsa' space to free freak. I am glad to have such dedicated tapers to allow me to flash today many years later! Bless you and all of ours!

Ok, a little story from the attics of my life. Was supposed to make Tempe the night before, but flight problems from Mich., blah blah.
I got into Vegas the night before, and stumbled onto the Strip with nothing but a back pack....no plan at all. Ran into a fellow Head who turned me onto his Uncle 'Cid. He also had some of those prism glasses with him.....I walked the Strip with a 6 pack of Heineken on acid looking through these glasses. Mind blowin' fun. We eventually met this girl working in a Dennys that was a Dead Head and she let us stay at her apartment. Can you imagine such great fortune meeting this kindred spirit?
The next day I met my friends and we prepared for the show at hand. Someone has me on video brushing my teeth with a Heineken (didn't have any water) and got kicked out of the Aladdin casino for not having any shoes on. People were paging Jerry over the casino intercom. It was a sight...Dead Heads in a sea of tie dye amongst the pristine lawns of the Aladdin. This was my sixth Dead show and it was a total blast. Every song was well played and the selection very nice. Man the doses in those days sure were good. We were treated to some of the now legendary 4 way black stars from Texas........those were the daze my friends! Thanks to every one who made this a memorable evening.

We drove from Colorado for a day and a half, saw the Dead in Tempe then drove all night to see them at the Alladin, copping free tix in the parking lot and caught Li'l Red Rooster as the opening song ( we were late ) It was Great...

Love this recording, had it for a while (before I found the archives even).
It's kind of muddy sounding but the bass drums have a certain thuddiness that shoots my big toe right through my wool socks.
The Scarlet and Estimated's are the highlights for me. Bobby is on fire. Jerry sounds like he's burned to a freaking crisp for some hard partying the night before, but Bobby refuses to let him get off easy. Bobby virtually pulls Jerry's pants off during the Estimated solo with some serious power chords (love the audience reaction!) and Jerry responds by bending over and giving the audience a sonic fruitbowl.
Plus it's in Vegas. Imagine wandering the strip tripping your freaking balls off after this show. Or before. ;)

I could argue about 4* vs. 5* here, but no way this deserves a measly 2* rating on the basis of audience presence! The measure of a good aud is not that it sounds like there's no audience. The amount of audience participation is just right on this recording, imo, definitely there but never interfering with the music. And the music is nice and crisp, recorded at one of those magic sweet spots. Two-star-guy must just hate the famous Hollywood Bowl aud :-).
And the setlist and performance are excellent also. Everyone seems in good form (I'm streaming Stella Blue right now, and Jer's in fine voice). It's not a trippy '72 show, it's '83 after all, but a very good '83. Haven't heard the whole thing yet, but this one definitely gets burned to CD.

good show, no question. 5 stars, definately not in my book. Great set list, but too much audience....but worth listening to for posterity.

This was one of my first really crispy aud tapes, listened to it til it was muddy, now it's in my car cassette deck, (tape Hell), nice to know I'll have it all crispy anew! Thanks for making this one available. I give this one a 5 even though I'm hearing the first set for the first time.
